Ivan Green Weekly Update

September 20, 2024

Welcome from Mr. Hiley

Dear Ivan Green Families:

Thank you to everyone who attended our PTA meeting last week. We had a wonderful turn-out, which is one of the many signs that it is going to be an awesome year at Ivan Green! With each passing day, our routines and procedures get a bit easier. We are all so pleased with the general transition our students are making to their new grade levels. We recognize that they are likely pretty tired at home. I have a picture of my son fast asleep on the steps in our house after his first full week of kindergarten. He sat down to take his shoes off and fell fast asleep. I empathize with those of you who are managing the afterschool meltdowns. They will subside as stamina is built. Our biggest concern is that students are enjoying school. Please reach out if that is a concern. We have a great support system here at school.

If you want to be part of our team, we are currently in need of several aides. Reach out if you are curious! It is a very family friendly job with some nice perks!

Sincerely,

Lucas Hiley, Ed.D.
Principal

Staff Spotlight

This year, we will use some newsletter space to introduce various staff members. Our hope is to help our community understand all the folks that contribute to our amazing community in a variety of ways.

Our first introduction is of Megan Howe, our new AVID Coordinator. She is excited to be working with our teachers to support their classrooms AND getting to know our students. She will meet each class soon to show them how to GROW: Get ready to learn, review what you know, open your mind, and wonder and ask.

I am so happy to be joining the Ivan Green team this year as the AVID Coordinator. I will continue working at Durand this year as the AVID Coordinator. I look forward to taking risks, learning and growing with you this year. Teaching is my passion! This is my 7th year in East Irondequoit. I taught 4th Grade and Math Intervention at Durand Eastman. Before that, I taught in the Rochester City School District and the International School of Sosua in the Dominican Republic. When I am not teaching, I love to spend time with my family. I have a dog named Besito who loves to go on walks and hikes. I love to travel, go on adventures and learn about new places. One of my favorite things to do is taking pictures while traveling. I also love to cook, read, garden and learn new things.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID students receive intentional support and mentoring in three major areas that help them become confident individuals who can successfully navigate life and career. 1.	Rigorous Academic Preparedness — Students develop academic skills and can successfully complete rigorous college and career preparatory curriculum and experiences. 2.	Opportunity Knowledge — Students research opportunities, set goals, make choices that support their long-term aspirations, and successfully navigate transitions to the next level. 3.	Student Agency — Students believe in themselves and act intentionally to build relationships, persist through obstacles, and activate their academic, social, emotional, and professional knowledge and skills to reach their potential.
WICOR
Opportunity Knowledge and Student Agency Through the implementation of AVID and Growth Mindset, students: 	Set goals. 	Explore pathways. 	Build relationships. 	Take risks. 	Accept failures as opportunities to grow. 	Make choices to allow themselves to reach their potential as they navigate through the different parts of their life.
