Safety Week, April 29-May3, All schools in the district will be conducting safety drills this week. These drills include fire drills and lock down drills. Don’t be alarmed if you hear the alarms sounding at schools or students standing outside for fire drills.

Drop Off and Pick Up Concerns

Left Turn

When picking up PreK students at the end of the day, please remember you must turn left out of the parking lot onto Westchester Ave. We have many cars turning right and passing buses with lights on, that are loading students. The new county bus patrol cameras can now take pictures of cars passing busses and issue citations. Please make sure you are turning left so you do not receive a citation. They can be avoided!

Also, please note that when the small parking lot by the playground is full, you may not create spots next to the sidewalk and on the grass. It blocks our small bus from dropping off students. Please follow the line of cars on Westchester to pull into the drop off zone, or park on a side street if you would like to walk your child to the front door! Thank you for helping us keep all students safe!

A Look Into Our Learning

Turtle

PreK: UPK was very excited to receive our Where the Wild Things Are books! We made a fun project to go along with the story. We've been learning about how to take care of the earth. We continue to work on letter sounds and formation, and number identification and counting.

Kindergarten: This week we are continuing to learn about America Then and Now. Students are beginning to write informational texts. We continue to build our foundational skills with digraphs and silent e. We practiced adding the -ed ending to words to write them in the past tense. Students are playing outside more and more and learning to problem solve on the playground. Be sure to send sneakers and a water bottle daily! We have two field trips coming up in May, and this weekend Mrs. Langdon will pick up our chick and duck eggs. We will set them in classroom incubators next week.

First Grade: This week in first grade we were really excited to read our One School One Book "Where the Wild Things Are." We talked about what makes us wild and wrote about it.  We are starting our Needs and Wants unit in Social Studies. We continue to learn about money, time and measurement in math.

Second: This week in second grade we continued to work on different strategies to add and subtract three-digit numbers. In ELA, we are learning about the digestive system. Wow! The digestive system is one amazing machine!  Second graders were excited and enjoyed kicking off our week with Helendale’s One School One Book, Where the Wild Things Are!

This week Helendale celebrated One School One Book. Each student received a copy of the book, the story was read in the classroom and crafts were posted all over the building. Please take some time to read this story with your child and discuss his/her favorite parts of this week.

Note From Ms. Zaffuto

Cold and flu season is upon us. Please read the message from Nurse Zaffuto to know when to keep your child home.

Please make sure to call your pediatrician to schedule a yearly physical if you have not done so already.

New York requires all school age children to be up to date on immunizations. Students have 14 days from the first day of school to have immunizations completed. All children who will turn 5 years of age during the school year will also need to follow these guidelines and have 14 days, starting on their 5th birthday, to have updated immunizations completed.

Please see the attached link and flyer for more information.

If your child needs to have emergency or daily medication here at school, contact the health office for further information. Please do not send any medication in with your child, a responsible adult needs to be present for all medication drop-offs/pick-ups.
