From the PTA

Student Art Opening Raffle & Silent Auction on June 6th

Here's the deal: we are collecting donations of gift baskets and other items.
And here's what we're doing with them:
Student's Original Square One Art piece on display in the cafeteria
Parents purchase their child's original art with a $5 or more donation to the PTA. All art will remain on display through the opening and come home the following week.
Every dollar spent as a Patron of the Arts (and PTA donor!) gets you one ticket for the raffle. And a Certificate of Authenticity of the artwork purchased.
Place your raffle tickets with the amazing gift baskets and prizes you want to win! Winners will be chosen after the event and contacted by a PTA member.
So, team up with grandparents, other Helendale families, classmates, and coworkers to put together one of the items listed here:

Drop Off and Pick Up Concerns

Left Turn

When picking up PreK students at the end of the day, please remember you must turn left out of the parking lot onto Westchester Ave. We have many cars turning right and passing buses with lights on, that are loading students. The new county bus patrol cameras can now take pictures of cars passing busses and issue citations. Please make sure you are turning left so you do not receive a citation. They can be avoided!

Also, please note that when the small parking lot by the playground is full, you may not create spots next to the sidewalk and on the grass. It blocks our small bus from dropping off students. Please follow the line of cars on Westchester to pull into the drop off zone, or park on a side street if you would like to walk your child to the front door! Thank you for helping us keep all students safe!

A Look Into Our Learning

Turtle

PreK: This week we learned all about the ocean habitat. We planted flowers with the reading teachers in the sensory garden.  We also continued to build on our phonological awareness skills with our Heggerty. We are busy getting ready for all of our end of the year activities!

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten we said goodbye to our chicks as they went back to the farm and hello to our new worms! Worms will help us learn more about living and nonliving things, what they need to survive, and how they impact the world around them. We continued to learn about how life in America has changed over time by looking at how homes, schools, transportation and communication have changed over time. In math we are learning about shapes and ordinal numbers. We are also learning positional words. We have begun rehearsing for our kindergarten celebration; we hope you can join us on Thursday, June 13 as we showcase our learning from the year!

First Grade: This week we went to Zoo and learned and observed different animals! We also, learned about Memorial Day. We finished up our math unit on shapes and fractions.

Second: This week in math, students have been using addition to find the total number of objects in a set of rows and columns as they continue to explore arrays. In ELA, our focusing question was How does food nourish us? Students read a variety of texts and completed shared research activities. Second graders enjoyed an amazing visit to Laurelton-Pardee School to meet some of the third grade teachers and staff. Students had the opportunity to hear the chorus and the 5th grade band solos. They explored the Library, Stem Lab, and had a chance to play on Laurelton-Pardee’s welcoming playground! Third grade… here we come!

Specials -Library: In library we are talking about the importance of bees and what they do to benefit us. We read the book “The Thing About Bees” By: Shabazz Larkin and talked about the “kind” bees and “not so kind” bees. We used different centers to support student learning. The centers were book & painting a beehive, beebots (introducing coding), how to draw a bee & insect play.

COVID 19 Updates

The CDC and NYDOH has issued new guidance related to isolation after testing positive for COVID 19. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Note From Ms. Zaffuto

Cold and flu season is upon us. Please read the message from Nurse Zaffuto to know when to keep your child home.

Please make sure to call your pediatrician to schedule a yearly physical if you have not done so already.

New York requires all school age children to be up to date on immunizations. Students have 14 days from the first day of school to have immunizations completed. All children who will turn 5 years of age during the school year will also need to follow these guidelines and have 14 days, starting on their 5th birthday, to have updated immunizations completed.

Please see the attached link and flyer for more information.

If your child needs to have emergency or daily medication here at school, contact the health office for further information. Please do not send any medication in with your child, a responsible adult needs to be present for all medication drop-offs/pick-ups.
