Student Art Opening Raffle & Silent Auction on June 6th
Here's the deal: we are collecting donations of gift baskets and other items.
And here's what we're doing with them:
Student's Original Square One Art piece on display in the cafeteria
Parents purchase their child's original art with a $5 or more donation to the PTA. All art will remain on display through the opening and come home the following week.
Every dollar spent as a Patron of the Arts (and PTA donor!) gets you one ticket for the raffle. And a Certificate of Authenticity of the artwork purchased.
Place your raffle tickets with the amazing gift baskets and prizes you want to win! Winners will be chosen after the event and contacted by a PTA member.
So, team up with grandparents, other Helendale families, classmates, and coworkers to put together one of the items listed here:
Drop Off and Pick Up Concerns
When picking up PreK students at the end of the day, please remember you must turn left out of the parking lot onto Westchester Ave. We have many cars turning right and passing buses with lights on, that are loading students. The new county bus patrol cameras can now take pictures of cars passing busses and issue citations. Please make sure you are turning left so you do not receive a citation. They can be avoided!
Also, please note that when the small parking lot by the playground is full, you may not create spots next to the sidewalk and on the grass. It blocks our small bus from dropping off students. Please follow the line of cars on Westchester to pull into the drop off zone, or park on a side street if you would like to walk your child to the front door! Thank you for helping us keep all students safe!
A Look Into Our Learning
PreK: This week we spent the week exploring dinosaurs. We also explored shapes and practiced measuring dinosaurs with cubes. RMSC is bringing a dinosaur field trip to us on Friday. UPK also had a fire safety lesson from Irondequoit firefighters. We had a fun filled week!
Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten we started writing topic sentences and adding details to our informational writing. We welcomed dozens of baby chicks across the grade level and have truly enjoyed learning to care for them and watching them grow! Classes visited Guida's and we continue to learn about 2D and 3D shapes in math. May has been an exciting month!
First Grade: Math: Attributes of Shapes and Equal Shares
The students have been learning about 2 D and 3 D shapes. Exploring how to build and draw 2D and 3D shapes. Students explored fractions; part over whole.
4H- we read We Dig Worms and learned about composting. We examined dirt and looked at the microorganisms that contribute to healthy soil.
Wit and Wisdom Our Essential Question is How do people respond to the powerful force of the wind? We read Feelings by Aliki and learned about the components of a story map. Students wrote sequenced, fictional stories about their feelings including character, setting, problem and resolution.
Second: This week, second grade started a new math unit. Students are learning about arrays and equal shares. In ELA, students read the book, The Vegetables We Eat and learned about what is nourishing food and where it comes from. Second graders enjoyed a sunny day exploring the Seneca Park Zoo. What an amazing field trip! Thank you to all of our wonderful chaperones, the day ran smoothly because of you! Helendale Rocks!
This week we participated in Joining Hearts and Hands. JHH is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of children in Africa. Since the almost 20 years that we began this fundraiser, we have raised thousands of dollars, while teaching our students the joy of helping others and at the same time practicing coin counting skills! 2024 Dance Party Treat: The grade level who collects the most money will have a dance party during school hours. Winner Announced: Tuesday the 28th.

COVID 19 Updates
The CDC and NYDOH has issued new guidance related to isolation after testing positive for COVID 19. Individuals can go back to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both of the following are true: Symptoms are getting better overall, and they no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Note From Ms. Zaffuto
Cold and flu season is upon us. Please read the message from Nurse Zaffuto to know when to keep your child home.
Please make sure to call your pediatrician to schedule a yearly physical if you have not done so already.
New York requires all school age children to be up to date on immunizations. Students have 14 days from the first day of school to have immunizations completed. All children who will turn 5 years of age during the school year will also need to follow these guidelines and have 14 days, starting on their 5th birthday, to have updated immunizations completed.
Please see the attached link and flyer for more information.
If your child needs to have emergency or daily medication here at school, contact the health office for further information. Please do not send any medication in with your child, a responsible adult needs to be present for all medication drop-offs/pick-ups.
