Women's history month today
Since the first Women’s History Week in 1978, other countries have joined the United States in honoring women and their contribution to history and culture, including Canada and Australia.
Each year the National Women’s History Alliance chooses a theme for Women’s History Month. Previous themes have included "Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet"(2009) and "Celebrating Women in STEM" (2013). The theme for 2020 and 2021 is "Valiant Women of the Vote." And the theme for 2023 is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
Beyond the theme of the year, Women’s History Month continues the discussion of women and their contributions through activities such as museum exhibits and film screenings, and by encouraging the study of achievements by women year-round.

Our first-grade concert was a hit! Please ask your student to share their favorite song. A big thank-you to Mr. Haller and the first-grade team for helping our performers prepare!
Drop Off and Pick Up Concerns
When picking up PreK students at the end of the day, please remember you must turn left out of the parking lot onto Westchester Ave. We have many cars turning right and passing buses with lights on, that are loading students. The new county bus patrol cameras can now take pictures of cars passing busses and issue citations. Please make sure you are turning left so you do not receive a citation. They can be avoided!
Also, please note that when the small parking lot by the playground is full, you may not create spots next to the sidewalk and on the grass. It blocks our small bus from dropping off students. Please follow the line of cars on Westchester to pull into the drop off zone, or park on a side street if you would like to walk your child to the front door! Thank you for helping us keep all students safe!
A Look Into Our Learning
PreK: This week in UPK we continued to talk about Spring. We planted seeds and talked about the Solar Eclipse. We also finished up our mid-year assessments. Looking ahead to April, there is no school for UPK students on Thursday, April 18th and Friday, April 19th due to parent-teacher conferences. A signup genius link will be sent from your child's teacher to schedule a conference time.
Kindergarten: This week we are learning more about weather changes and digging deeper into digraphs! Digraphs are 2 letters that make one sound (th/sh/ch/wh/ck). Students are building words with digraphs and listening for digraphs within words. We are even starting to manipulate words to build new words, for example: "chin" can become "thin" by changing he digraph at the beginning. "Thin" can be changed to "thick" and "thick" to "chick". Word chaining helps students make connections between sounds in words. In math we are listening to number stories to determine if we should add or subtract, then working together to solve the problem. We are continuing our study of narrative writing and learning more about the upcoming eclipse.
First Grade: In ELA, we finished our informative paragraphs about creature features. In math, we finished our unit that focused on two-digit subtraction. We had so much fun performing in our first-grade chorus concert this week! We also learned all about the Solar Eclipse that will be happening on April 8th and we are SO excited!
Second: This week second grade finished up our math unit on Place Value and Numbers to 1,000. Students were busy working on numerous assessments for ELA to end our unit on Civil Rights Heroes. We had a fire safety presentation with Lt Steve from the Irondequoit Fire District. Students enjoyed listening to a story about the solar eclipse and making their very own eclipse models with our librarian Mrs. Woolaver.
Specials: Visual Arts with Mr. Green
Our Helendale Artists completed their Square One Art Projects for our school-wide PTA fundraiser.
The following grades created:
Pre K - Painted Handprints.

Be on the look out in the weeks ahead when our artwork returns from the Square One Art Company.
Families will be able to purchase an assortment of items with their son’s/daughter’s original artwork printed on them! They make for beautiful keepsakes and gifts!
Eclipse fun at Helendale!

COVID 19 Updates
The CDC and NYDOH has issued new guidance related to isolation after testing positive for COVID 19. Individuals can go back to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both of the following are true: Symptoms are getting better overall, and they no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication. Please reach out if you have any questions.
Note From Ms. Zaffuto
Cold and flu season is upon us. Please read the message from Nurse Zaffuto to know when to keep your child home.
Please make sure to call your pediatrician to schedule a yearly physical if you have not done so already.
New York requires all school age children to be up to date on immunizations. Students have 14 days from the first day of school to have immunizations completed. All children who will turn 5 years of age during the school year will also need to follow these guidelines and have 14 days, starting on their 5th birthday, to have updated immunizations completed.
Please see the attached link and flyer for more information.
If your child needs to have emergency or daily medication here at school, contact the health office for further information. Please do not send any medication in with your child, a responsible adult needs to be present for all medication drop-offs/pick-ups.
