March 2026

3rd Grade ELA and Math

ELA:In March, third grade students will conclude their module on outer space and begin a new module, "A New Home."  In this module, students will explore the immigrant experience through the lens of stories.  Throughout the unit, students will ask, "How do stories help us understand immigrants' experiences?"  Please see the parent tip sheet for more information.

Math: Third grade students are continuing to learn about fractions through the first part of March.  Following that, they will launch into a unit that focuses on using place-value patterns and properties of operations to multiply 1-digit numbers by multiples of 10.  Please see the parent resource for more information.

 

4th Grade ELA and Math

ELA: In March, 4th grade students will conclude, "The Redcoats Are Coming," module and will begin a new module, titled, "Extreme Weather."  During this module students will examine how people react to extreme environments.  Throughout the unit, they will ask and answer the question, "How do humans survive against the odds?" See the parent tip sheet for additional information

Math – In March, students will conclude topics 7 and 8 and begin topic 9.   Topic 9 develops an understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions.  The parent resources linked in the paragraph provide additional information about each topic.

5th Grade ELA and Math

ELA - 5th grade students will conclude their module called "Word Play."  They will begin their next module, "Breaking Barriers."  Throughout this module, students will consider the power that sports have to affect how people view each other, create opportunities, and help people overcome challenges and barriers.  Please see the parent tip sheet for more information.

Math – In March, 5th grade students will finish Topic 9, which focuses on applying conceptual understanding of whole-number division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.  They will then shift to topic 10, which focuses on using line plots to represent and interpret data. The linked parent resources will provide additional information.

Social Emotional Learning

This month’s focus is Cooperation. One way to think about Cooperation is “working together to reach shared goals.” As a family, talk about how this definition applies to how you work together at home. What are some goals you share? Cooperation is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.

Content Corner

3rd grade: Students will be engaged in a "World Communities" unit, which highlights culture, economy, and government.

4th grade: Students will begin a unit on slavery, abolition, and the Civil War.

5th grade: students will begin a unit called, "Deer, Deer, Everywhere," In this unit, the phenomenon of deer overpopulation is used by students to explore matter and energy in organisms and ecosystems.
