February 2026

3rd Grade ELA and Math

ELA: students will continue their, "Outer Space," module through the month of February.  By reading books and examining art, students explore our fascination with the cosmos, asking the question: How do people learn about space?   See the Family Tip Sheet for more details.

Math: In February, 3rd grade students begin their study of fractions. They first develop their understanding that fractions are numbers that can represent a portion of a whole or a point on the number line. Then they deepen their study of fractions using models and number sense to understand fraction equivalence and comparison. 4th Grade ELA and Math

ELA: Through February, 4th grade students continue their learning in, "The Redcoats are Coming!" unit.  Through interacting with a variety of texts, students will improve their critical-thinking skills as both readers and writers. They will ask the question: Why is it important to understand all sides of a story?  See the Parent Tip Sheet for more information.  

Math – In the month of February, 4th grade students will start topic 7, which will build on their understanding of multiplication to focus on understanding the meaning of factors and multiples. Students will then begin Topic 8 which focuses on recognizing and generating equivalent fractions and on comparing fractions with different numerators and different denominators.  The linked parent resources will provide additional information.

5th Grade ELA and Math

ELA - 5th grade students will continue their 2nd module, called "Word Play."  In Module 2, they will study the way we use words to define and organize our world. They will read playful stories to investigate wordplay and answer the question: How and why do writers play with words? See the Parent Tip Sheet for more details.

Math – In the month of February, 5th grade students are working on topics 8 and 9. Topic 8 focuses on recognizing and generating equivalent fractions and on comparing fractions with different numerators and different denominators. Topic 9 focuses on applying conceptual understanding of whole-number division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. Social Emotional Learning

This month’s focus is Honesty. One way to think about Honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing Honesty helps strengthen our relationships and reduce stress. Honesty is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.

Content Corner

3rd grade: Students continue their, "Where are the Wolves," unit where they investigate wolves and their impact on an ecosystem.

4th grade: Students continue their unit, “Waves: Riding the Waves of Information” where they learn science concepts related to wave motion, properties, and communication. 

5th grade: students will continue their unit on Earth and Space, exploring the solar system, Moon, and stars through hands-on kits, models, and investigations
